How To Get Started As An Online Community Manager

1.jpg

I am increasing being asked for tips on how to get started in Community Management, so I thought I'd put my fingers to the keyboard and post some of my thoughts on how aspiring Community Managers could can gain some valuable experience, and get on the first wrung of the CM ladder. Start from the Bottom If you don't have any experience in this role then you will need to start at the bottom. In my opinion there is no better way to learn the ropes than as a moderator. You'll be down in the trenches interacting with … [Read more...]

Positive Comments Only – Tales From My Community Manager Letterbox

5416761368_c17c7102b2_m

After a little break (having been busy doing stuff elsewhere. I know, I actually do some stuff away from online communities … shock horror … please don't tell anyone). Here is another letter from my inbox. As always I've removed personally identifiable information, and other stuff (don't you love my technical jargon) that pertains to the community I manage … so please bear that in mind when reading. I am sharing some of my correspondence so that you can view firsthand how I deal with different situations. … [Read more...]

Thinking of growing a mustache …. what do you think?

hitler

Following on from one of my recent tweets, I thought you would like to see this lovely pic of me. Said troll came back to re-register today in order to let me know how he felt about the fact he was banned from the community. I actually think I look very fetching with a mustache and love the way he's combined the HItler reference, with a more updated reference to a Suddam Hussein type person. Very current. So if anyone believed that I was exaggerating in this post when I mentioned you need a thick skin in this line … [Read more...]

Rose-Tinted Specs?

specs

I frequently come across an article that states that the Online Community Manager position is an up-and-coming role, with some even suggesting that if one "Tweets" or uses online communities then anyone can do the job. But that's really not the case. It takes a special kind of person, with a particular mindset. And not everyone is suited to that. For instance I couldn't be a nurse or an accountant just because I balance my own books, or have nursed my son when he was sick. (I know, extreme examples, but you get my … [Read more...]

By George I think I've just "got" foursquare!

foursquare

Over the last few months I've been seeing a growing number of posts about foursquare. People tweeting their locations, becoming mayors, and collecting medals. At first I didn't pay much interest. I'm more into community spaces than anything and I couldn't really see the point. I suppose I didn't "get it." That, coupled with the fact that I'm still trying to get to grips with the plethora of social networking platforms on offer, and I wondered if I really wanted to get on another band wagon just because everyone … [Read more...]

Newbie Alert

How many times have you taken the time to stop and examine your community through the eyes of a newbie? I must admit to having dropped the ball on this of late. I think I had neglected to remember what it was like to feel like a newbie until I started some college classes recently. Everything was new, and strange and I had no idea what was going on. The first day of my International Business class I must have looked like a deer caught in car headlights lights as the professor loaded us up with rules, guidelines and … [Read more...]

A Community Manager Should Never Stop Learning

I truly am fascinated with the interaction of people online, it's one of the reasons I've been a community manager for almost 10 years. The last 6 months or so I have slowly come to the realization that I am good at what I do, and that the community management knowledge that I have accumulated over the years does have worth. I may not be as corporate savvy as some, but is that necessarily a disadvantage? Instead of having my head up in the clouds I have been down in the trenches getting myself dirty, and … [Read more...]

What's in a Name?

I have been monitoring new job postings for Community Managers and noticing that the job descriptions, roles and responsibilities, varies widely, and it made me wonder if many employers are blurring the lines between community management and social media. In many areas these roles do over lap, and I think that's what makes it somewhat confusing. Some roles I've seen advertised are clearly not roles for Online Community Managers, but rather Social Media Managers/Marketers. So what's in name, should … [Read more...]

Too Much, Too Loud!

I would say approx 70-80% of a community managers time is "behind the scenes" stuff. For example, I always try and connect with as many of our members behind the scenes as much as possible. It's that one-to-one connection that builds relationships and respect, and lets the other person know that you care about their opinions and their experiences. As we are all discovering, the role of a Community Manger is still changing and evolving. For many it's not just about the managing of our static … [Read more...]
